Chapter 15

It was a few seconds before C.J.’s announcement registered, and when it did Christian was rendered speechless—something that didn’t happen often.

C.J. took advantage of the silence. “So, should I call you Mr. Watson or will Johnny do?”

“Johnny’s fine.” He removed his baseball cap and set it next to the sunglasses.

“Okay, Johnny. Nice to meet you. It’s not every day I get to have a beer with someone famous. I guess the big question is what kind of scam is this?”

Before Johnny could begin an explanation, Christian regained his ability to speak.

“Wait just a minute!” He frowned at his best friend. “Why are you two sittin’ here kibitzin’ like old pals when this guy—” Christian glared at the singer “—is pulling some kind of hanky-panky on my mother-in-law.” He lapsed into the lethal tone of voice that used to send drug lords scampering for cover.

“Hold it.” Johnny raised his hands in surrender, but didn’t back down. “I can explain everything.”

“Damned straight you’re gonna explain.” Christian was on the verge of exploding.

“It’s like this. I met Marci accidentally when the ladies got lost on their way to New Braunfels. They thought I was a cowboy and I didn’t disabuse them of that notion. I still can’t figure out what happened when I met her, it was…like I got zapped. Good God, my skin was clammy and my pulse started to race. Damned if I didn’t think I was having a heart attack. Needless to say, I had to get to know her better.”

Out of the corner of his eye, Christian noticed Teddy heading in their direction with an armload of beers. Until he ferreted out exactly what was going on, the fewer people who were in on the secret, the better. He caught Teddy’s eye and waved him off. A cold brew would have to wait.

“Why?”

Johnny looked puzzled for a moment. “Why what?”

“Why would you want to get to know Marci? With you being rich and famous and all. I wouldn’t have thought she’d be your type. I love her and she’s great. But she is a retired kindergarten teacher.”

Johnny leaned forward as if to confide in them. “You’re seeing her through different eyes than I am. Not every man over the age of fifty-five is interested in a blonde twenty-year old bimbo.” Johnny was on a roll and didn’t seem inclined to stop. “I’m enthralled by Marci. To me she’s beautiful, smart, funny, and she has a heart the size of Texas. What more could a man want?”

Christian and C.J. glanced at each other. Their wives fit that description to a T, and they were very happy men.

“So if this isn’t a con for your recreation, how do you see it playing out?” C.J. asked the question, beating Christian by only a second.

“She’s gonna be mad when she discovers you’ve been deceiving her.” That comment came from Christian.

“I’m afraid you’re right,” Johnny conceded. “I just wanted to get to know her without all the extra stuff messing it up. Now I’m afraid I have a huge problem.
